When Harper seeks out the Mentex treatment after she experiences a death and her father, the founder of Mentex forbids it, she starts to get curious about why. With her boyfriend's internship at the facility, they arrange for her to get the treatment without her parents' knowledge and it unleashes a whole new strand of questions about her past, and Mentex's past.
I would probably recommend this book to a beginner reader because it was mostly enjoyable. This just was too predictable for me - which meant it was too "young" for me, too. I felt like this would've been the perfect read for someone in junior high - and it would've been easier to relate to in that age range.

The characters were fairly well done... but they were all so similar. You have the polar opposite best friends - Harper and Win. You have the good boyfriend (the current one at that) and the bad boy, leading Harper on her journey. You have two separate personalities in every set of character dynamics. There's a submissive, and there's a dominant. And I don't think it was planned, necessarily, but it's very obvious that in every relationship each person plays a specific role with that other person, so I felt as if the characters were all similar, and that meant that they all molded into who they needed to be with that person. Which I don't care for. I felt Laura was maybe the most unified character - never breaking into a "shocking" role.
I've read a few similar books. And this was the biggest issue I had because I'm such a large fan of The Program series and it wasn't really exciting for me because the story line was so incredibly similar. There's even key components in this story that you see in the Program Series (which may not have been known, but they were just too similar).
The writing was good. But it was basic. I needed something more. After 180 pages, I really wanted to give up on the book, but I chose to continue going to see if I knew what was happening was actually happening.
The excitement level wasn't quite up there. As far as the story went, it was predictable. I knew what was going to happen for the most part half way through, so I missed on the shock-factor. There were moments of "ah," but it was mostly just ... š
The story line was well thought out with few flaws. Back to the predictability - this kind of ruined the story line for me.
The title fit well with the story's tone.
The artwork was fine, but it was just a face. And the face wasn't all that special...
