You know John Green, right? Well, if you've read his book An Abundance of Katherines, and you've read my blog... you'll know I thought it was a horrible book. We Should Hang Out Sometime is the way I WANTED that book to be. WSHOS was an incredibly well-written MEMOIR. Yeah, I picked up a non-fiction book. It was an accident really. When I added this book to my TBR a while back, I never really put the connection together that it was a memoir... and as I went in to set up my website to reflect what I was currently reading, well... I took a deep breath and thought, "OK. I'm going to give this a shot."
I really hate memoirs. This is only the second successful memoir on my shelf (the other being Lucky by Alice Sebold). I think anyone who can write an entire book about themselves is a special person - and usually not in a good way. But, this book read no differently than any other YA fiction book. It was, undoubtedly, similar to An Abundance of Katherines and one other book I read recently... but it was special enough to stand out. And it will probably be a book I recommend for a long time coming, too. It was real, obviously - funny, but also innocent and sweet.
It was a little unbelievable at some points, but this is a memoir... so according to what happened in the book, it happened in Josh's life. I personally wouldn't have the balls to do the research this guy did; nor would I have come to the realization he did, but maybe that's because I have two legs? Or maybe because I just accept things for how they are? It wasn't the most exciting book I've ever read..., but that didn't necessarily make it poorly written or anything. It was just a little slow. Propelling, but slow.
This book really was sweet. It was kind, funny, and maybe even a little bit comforting. Pick it up. Read it. Love it. Whatever you do to good books, do with this one.
